Breastfeeding Buddy System

gingerpixel_photography__newborn_photography_1_15966A Breastfeeding Buddy is mum in your local area who has breastfed her own child and who has attended breastfeeding information training. She is not a health professional but she will be able to provide you with peer support and encouragement. She will provide you with literature/information on breastfeeding and sources of other help available in your area should you need it. Your Breastfeeding Buddy will encourage and support you through the early days of breastfeeding your baby. Your Breastfeeding Buddy is also available to you to accompany you to a local group or to go out for a coffee to nurse in public for the first time. The Buddy system will Launch February 2nd 2013.

Please note:
– This program is being run on a trial basis in cooperation with the Coombe Women’s and Infants Hospital, Dublin and will operate in a limited number of areas.
– This service is entirely free of charge
– There are a limited number of buddies in each area, who will be assigned to mums on a first come first served basis. We hope to accommodate everybody, but cannot guarantee this.

gingerpixel_photography__newborn_photography_1_15938The Breastfeeding Friendly Initiative (BFI) is an ongoing project which aims to raise public awareness of the fact that mothers are entitled by law to breastfeed anywhere and at any time they want. It also aims to help mothers feel more comfortable about breastfeeding in public, an issue which is regularly cited by new mothers as a reason for stopping breastfeeding early or not starting at all.

One of the main components of the BFI has been a very successful sticker campaign. Participating businesses are asked to display a Friends of Breastfeeding sticker in their window and are then listed on the Friends of Breastfeeding website as a breastfeeding friendly establishment for mothers to check out and visit. There are currently more then 100 Irish cafes, restaurants and play centers taking part in the Initiative and we’d love to see that number grow!

If you would like to play a part in making Ireland Breastfeeding Friendly, please give us a shout at bfi@friendsofbreastfeeding.ie

OK2What does Breastfeeding Look Like?

If you grew up in Ireland and don’t come from a breastfeeding background yourself, there’s a good chance that you’ve never seen a baby being nursed. Well, now’s your chance! Using donated images as well as pics taken at events hosted by Friends of Breastfeeding, We have compiled a collection of photos to show what nursing really looks like. If you are interested in submitting your own photos, please send them to chair@friendsofbreastfeeding.ie
