Friends of Breastfeeding Pins

"Around 70,000 babies were born in Ireland in 2007 and about 42% of woman breastfeed. However some breastfeeding women find it very difficult to breastfeed in public. They may feel alone or uncomfortable in feeding their baby in public. They worry that someone may make an unwelcome comment and feel that they have little or no support.

The Friends of Breastfeeding pins were created to show a silent show of support for breastfeeding in Ireland. The pin would say that the wearer recognises that breastfeeding is normal, that they are in support of women who breastfeed their babies and those who do so in public places.

If seeing someone wearing this pin stops just one woman feeling alone or uncomfortable in feeding her baby herself then it has done its job well. We hope that one day this pin will be completely unnecessary because breastfeeding will be recognised for what it is, no big deal, just the way to feed a baby."
