Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge 2012

Irish Breastfeeding Mothers rise to the Challenge Again!!!

Despite the fact that Ireland has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world, Irish mothersand babies defied the statistics to place first and second in the Global Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge which took place across the world on Saturday, 1stOctober 2011.  Friends of Breastfeeding coordinated the Irish leg of the Challenge in eight venues nationwide, which saw nearly 400 children breastfeeding simultaneously. Dublin, which had 146 nurslings, and Cork (which was only just behind with 145) were triumphant as the top two sites in the world for 2011. 2012 will see the opportunity to beat this number at a number of venues nationwide including Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick among others.

Jolene Keating, general secretary of Friends of Breastfeeding, said “The focus of Friends of Breastfeeding is to foster a positive breastfeeding culture in Ireland and raise awareness about breastfeeding support options. The mothers and babies took part in the 2011 Challenge surrounded by their fathers, grannies and older siblings in what was very much a family event. We look forward to doing it all over again this year.”

The Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge is an annual event which is staged worldwide to raise public awareness of the need for proper information and support for breastfeeding families and the normalization of breastfeeding in society.

It originated in the Canadian province of British Columbia back in 2001 with 856 babies and their mothers sitting down to nurse simultaneously at 26 different sites. The Challenge has since grown to become an annual global event.

2010 was Ireland’s first year participating and the 98 mothers who gathered in a Cork Shopping center to simultaneously nurse their 106 children placed 4th out of 216 sites worldwide.

2011’s event saw over 275 sites registered in more than 10 countries. Friends of Breastfeeding coordinated the Challenge events in eight Irish venues,

In Dublin, 146 nursing pairs took part in City West Shopping Center followed closely by Cork City with 136 mothers nursing 145 children at Mahon Point Shopping Center. 6 Other Irish sites took part in counties Galway, Kilkenny, Offaly, Mayo and Limerick. Guests such as Dublin South County Council Mayor, Caitriona Jones and Cork Mother and Little Fighters author Angie Benhaffaff helped to make the day truly special.
