Breastfeeding Buddy System

FoBF Breastfeeding Buddy System – Dublin

The Friends of Breastfeeding Buddy System pairs expectant or new mothers with volunteers in their area who have experience of breastfeeding, and offer social and practical support.  We leave the technical side to the experts, and focus on helping mothers overcome social and personal barriers to breastfeeding, for example by accompanying them while nursing in public and encouraging confidence in their own mothering instincts.  We try to introduce new mothers to support groups where they will find others with babies of the same age, and help them to find appropriate solutions if they are experiencing difficulties.

We are expanding this free service to cover all of the greater Dublin area.  If you feel that you could help improve breastfeeding support in your area, please apply by Saturday October 3rd 2015.  Contact judycorway@friendsofbreastfeeding.ie for an application form!

We are appealing in particular for volunteers in Dublin South East (as far as Bray), Dublin North and Dublin City Centre.  Training will begin in late October.  Buddies will receive 24 hours of training in peer support and breastfeeding support in group sessions, led by an IBCLC lactation consultant in a friendly, warm and open atmosphere.

The dates for training are

Saturday 24th October 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm

Saturday 7th November 10am-12pm & 12:30-2:30pm

Saturday 14th November 10am-12pm & 12:30-2:30pm

Saturday 21st November 10am-12pm & 12:30-2:30pm

Saturday 28th November 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm

The venue for training is The Green Kitchen Café, Walkinstown Green, Dublin 12.  A lovely private training room (with toys available for toddlers) is available for up to 20 trainees.  The venue is fully wheelchair accessible, has changing facilities and serves food and drinks to the training room.  The Café is opposite Tony Kealy’s pram shop and a new playground has been installed outside on the green.  The Café is a short walk from the Red line Luas, served by Dublin Bus lines 27, 77A, 56A, 151, 18 and 123 and has ample free parking.  For those driving it is closest to the Red Cow or Ballymount junctions of the M50.  It is also a short walk to numerous shops, cafes, pubs and an indoor playcentre.
