Cuidiú is a voluntary organisation which provides education and support for parenthood. Their aim is to provide information to parents, enabling them to make informed choices about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. It also aims to empower parents to implement their choices and decisions. They further aim to provide support to all parents around pregnancy, birth, feeding methods and other postnatal issues.
Cuidiú have a special interest in support parents to breastfeed, both at a parent to parent level, but also by providing evidenced based information through their breastfeeding counsellors. Cuidiú breastfeeding counsellors complete a two year course covering a variety of breastfeeding topics over 20 modules. Training includes counselling and listening skills and breastfeeding information elements, based on the latest scientific research. Participants have a lengthy required reading list and practical elements to their training, ensuring they are well-informed and well-prepared to support mothers and provide accurate breastfeeding information and options. Breastfeeding counsellors offer their services voluntarily and are available to answer your queries over the phone and may also be able to call to you if you wish. Most branches have community support groups for all parents regardless of feeding choice.

Midwives and Public Health Nurses undergo 20 hours of breastfeeding education as part of their undergraduate training. When the HSE runs these courses, they also offer places to GP’s and other health professional groups. HSE breastfeeding support groups are mostly run by public health nurses.
